An individual with good character or superior is someone who seeks to do the best things about God YME, himself, fellow, environment, nation, and the state as well as the international world in general by optimizing his potential (knowledge) and accompanied by consciousness, emotion, and motivation (his feelings).

Character education is a system of planting character values to a school citizen that includes a component of knowledge, awareness or will, and actions to implement those values. Character education can be interpreted as "the deliberate use of all dimensions of school life to foster optimal character development".

In character education in schools, all components (stakeholders) must be involved, including the educational components themselves, the contents of the curriculum, the process of learning and assessment, the handling or management of subjects, the management of the school, the implementation of activities or activities co-curricular, the empowerment of infrastructure, financing, and ethos work of all the school/ward citizens. In addition, character education is interpreted as a behavior of school citizens who organize the education must be characteristic.

According to David Elkind & Freddy Sweet Ph.D. (2004), character education is the following: "Character education is the deliberate effort to help people understand, care about, and act upon core ethical values.

When we think about the kind of character we want for our children, it is clear that we want them to be able to judge what is right, care deeply about what is right, and then do what they believe to be right, even in the face of pressure from without and temptation from within ".

It is further explained that character education is everything that teachers do, which is able to influence the character of learners. Teachers help shape the character of learners. This includes an example of how teacher behavior, how teachers speak or convey material, how to master tolerance and other related matters.

According to T. Ramli (2003), character education has the same essence and meaning as moral education and sexual education. The goal is to shape the child's personal life, to be a good human, a citizen, and a good citizen.

As for the good human criteria, good citizens, and citizens who are good for a society or nation, in general, are certain social values, which are heavily influenced by the culture of society and its people.

Therefore, the nature of character education in the context of education in Indonesia is the education of value, namely the educational of sublime values that are sourced from Indonesian culture itself, in order to foster the personality of the young generation.

The character's education is based on the basic human character, which is derived from the universal moral value (absolute) derived from the religion, also referred to as the Golden rule. Character education can have a definite objective when based on the values of these basic characters. According to the psychologists, some of the basic character values are: Love to Allah and his creativity (nature with its content), responsibilities, honesty, respect and courtesy, compassion, caring, and cooperation, confident, creative, hard work, and abstinence Surrender, justice and leadership; Good and humble, tolerance, love of peace, and love unity.

Another opinion says that the basic human character is comprised of: trustworthy, respectful and caring, caring, honest, responsible; Citizenship, sincerity, courageous, diligent, disciplined, visionary, fair, and have integrity.

The implementation of character education in schools should be based on basic character values, which are further developed into more or higher values (which are not absolute or relative) according to The school's own needs, conditions, and environment.

Today many parties demand an increased intensity and quality of character education implementation on formal educational institutions. The demands are based on a growing social phenomenon, i.e. increased juvenile delinquency in society, such as mass fights and other cases of moral decadence.

Even in certain major cities, these symptoms have come to a very disturbing level. Therefore, formal education institutions as an official container of development of young generations are expected to improve their role in the formation of students ' personalities through increased intensity and quality of character education.

Education experts are generally in agreement about the importance of the efforts to improve character education on formal educational pathways. However, there are differences of opinion between them about their approach and education mode.

In touch with the approach, some experts suggest the use of moral education approaches developed in Western countries, such as cognitive moral development approaches, value analysis approaches and approaches Clarification of value. Some others suggest the use of traditional approaches, namely through the planting of certain social values in learners.

Based on the grand design developed by Kemendiknas (2010), psychologically and socio-cultural character formation in individuals is a function of all human potential (cognitive, affective, contemplative, and psychomotor) in Context of social and cultural interactions (in families, schools, and communities) and lasts for life.

Scholars have expressed various theories on moral education.  According to Hersh, et. Al. (1980), among the various theories that develop, there are six theories that are widely used; Namely: rational development approaches, consideration approaches, value clarification approaches, cognitive moral development approaches, and social-behavioral approaches.

Unlike the classification, Elias (1989) classified various theories that evolved into three, namely: cognitive approaches, affective approaches, and behavioral approaches. Classification is based on three elements of morality, which is the usual focus of psychological studies, namely: behavior, cognition, and affection.

Based on the above discussion, it is affirmed that character education is an effort that is systematically designed and implemented to help learners understand the values of human behavior related to the Lord Almighty, oneself, fellowmen, the environment, and nationality that manifest in mind, attitude, feelings, words, and deeds based on religious norms, laws, manners, cultures, and customs.
